The Summer Girlfriend (Heart Beach, #1)(80)

“Fuck,” he whispered. “I can’t believe this is happening.”

Noelle smiled, and her pulse thumped erratically as she began to move up and down. He touched her where they were joined, and she moaned as she rode him, closing her eyes and letting her head fall back.

“Come here,” he ground out. “I need you closer.”

He pulled her to lie against him chest to chest. At this angle, she felt him even deeper. She was pliant in his arms as he gripped her ass and pumped into her. His movements were rough, but she liked it.

“Does that feel good?” he panted.

“Yes.”

“Kiss me.”

Their mouths and tongues were sloppy as they kissed, trying to get the most of each other as he pounded into her. When the orgasm washed over her, saturating her in pleasure, her moan was so loud and guttural, she was glad that no one else was home. The sound was enough to drive Jeremiah over the edge. His thrusts intensified, and she felt him jerk inside of her as he filled the condom.

They lay there, boneless. Breathing hard and still joined.

“I don’t want to sound like I’m exaggerating,” he said, breaking the silence, voice heavy. “But I think this might be the best day of my life.”

Noelle smiled as she pressed her lips against his shoulder. “You’re silly,” she whispered.

“Silly, but serious.” He gave her ass a light smack and she clenched her muscles around his length that was still buried inside of her. “You okay?”

She nodded and lifted her head to look at him. His expression was dazed. She imagined that she looked the same. “Are you?”

“I’m fucking wonderful.”

She laughed and leaned her head against him again. She expected to feel apprehension over what they’d done, about how they’d rewritten the rules of their relationship. But as the rain beat against the windows and Jeremiah ran his fingers up and down her spine, she was thinking only about how good it felt to be in his arms.

Eventually, she shifted her hips so that Jeremiah could slip from inside her and remove the condom. She snuggled under the covers and watched as he padded naked across the hall to the bathroom. He grinned as he returned and slid in bed next to her. She turned on her side to face him and he did the same, resting his hand against her hip. He moved closer and kissed her, slow and deep. Then a loud crack of thunder rolled across the sky, making them both jump.

A meow sounded from the hall, and the next thing Noelle knew, Caesar scrambled into Jeremiah’s room and jumped onto the bed. Noelle gasped and pulled the covers up to her neck. Now finally able to get a good look at the cat, she saw that Caesar was pink and wrinkly, and he stared at them with big yellow eyes. Jeremiah reached for Caesar, but the cat hissed in warning and curled into a loaf at the foot of the bed.

“He hates me, but he hates thunderstorms more,” Jeremiah explained. “He doesn’t like to be alone when it rains.”

Noelle raised an eyebrow, and Caesar looked directly at her without blinking. His expression said, So what if I’m afraid of thunderstorms? I’ll still scratch your ass any day. Seeming satisfied that his threat was received, Caesar turned his head and looked out the window.

Noelle turned to look out the window too, and Jeremiah spooned her from behind. Content and satiated, they watched the falling summer rain together.

Chapter Twenty-Four

Later, after the storm cleared and Caesar retreated to Celeste’s bedroom and the rest of the Smiths returned home, Jeremiah and Noelle dressed and joined everyone downstairs. They gathered in the living room to survey the disarray of tree branches in the backyard. Some houses a few streets over had lost electricity, but luckily the Smiths hadn’t been affected. Celeste floated the idea of going out for dinner, but everyone agreed that it was too messy outside to leave again. Instead, they ordered pizza and decided to have another movie night. It took them a while to decide on a movie that pleased the adults while also being appropriate for Harper and Ashley. Eventually, they decided on The Lion King live action.

Jeremiah didn’t really care what they watched because he was barely focused on the movie. Noelle held all of his attention. He kept his arm around her shoulder and held her close as she leaned into his side. He couldn’t stop touching her in little ways, massaging the back of her neck or resting his other hand on her knee. All he could think about was the things he wanted to do to her once they were back upstairs in the privacy of his bedroom, and how relieved he was to know that she wanted more than just friendship too, that they were getting their fresh start.

He was willing to remove his arm from around her shoulders only when he went to answer the door for Danny. It had started to rain again as Danny had walked over from the bookstore. He was soaked, and raindrops covered his glasses lenses. He shook out his arms and legs like a wet cat. Jeremiah burst out laughing.

“Bro, why did you walk?” he asked, opening the door wider to let Danny inside.

Danny laughed sardonically and sighed. “I didn’t know it was gonna rain again. I wanted the fresh air. Probably should have checked the weather first.”

“Yeah, probably.” Jeremiah dapped up his best friend. Unlike his other past friendships, Jeremiah’s friendship with Danny had always been genuine, and that was the reason it had endured. Danny was born and raised in Heart Beach with parents who’d been born and raised here too. Growing up, Danny was the pride of Heart Beach as everyone watched him excel in school and sports. The people here still saw him as their golden boy with his successful tech engineer career in Philadelphia. Only Jeremiah knew how stressful it had been for Danny to uphold that image when they were younger, and it was one of the reasons that Danny had loved being at the Smiths’ house. They were Heart Beachers too, but only three to four months out of the year. Being around Jeremiah and his family had allowed an escape for Danny to simply be.
