A Soul to Revive (Duskwalker Brides, #5)(51)

Author:Opal Reyne

Ingram reached up to stroke down his beak. “I have that bird’s skull.”

“I know,” she answered warmly, her eyes glinting mischievously.

Wise? This is the word she thinks of when she looks upon my face? Once more, his tail curled in delight.

She was trying to please him, and to his dismay, it was working.

When he took too long to move, she gave him a sigh and laid back. Turning on her side, she brought her knees up and tucked her hands under her marred cheek. She curled up on top of her sleep bag, as if she preferred it to cushion her rather than warm her.

He’d noted a while ago that she always began her sleep by lying with her scarred side face down.

Ingram shifted his position until he was on his hands and feet, and crouch-walked until he was near her. With an oomph, he laid down behind her with his back touching hers, unwilling to face her when he was still upset.

Emerie turned, causing him to stiffen. She stroked his side.

“I really am sorry for upsetting you.” He huffed in response, selfishly refusing to answer in hopes she would keep stroking him. “Fine, I’ll leave it be. Just don’t fall asleep, okay? I’ll take the early watch so you can get a few hours in before we set off again.”

Ingram didn’t see the point in her watching over him while he slept. Her protection felt very mediocre, considering she was such a little human who wouldn’t be able to fend off anything dangerous. If Ingram wanted to, he could easily pick her up by the back of her shirt and toss her.

After a little while, her hand languidly slipped down his back and her breaths evened out into light huffs. He rotated his head so he could look over his shoulder, inspecting whether she was truly unconscious.

Slowly, as to not disturb her, Ingram rolled over.

He gingerly slipped his arm underneath her head to cushion it before wrapping both around her torso. He drew Emerie closer until she was firmly pressed against him.

I like this new body.

Having a similar shape to a human allowed him to lay flush with her, rather than having to curl his much larger body around her smaller one.

Staring down at her, all his earlier irritation bled out of him – assisted by the fact she’d insinuated he was wise and called him something pleasant.

He’d also learned what the word beautiful meant today, and he was pleased he already found something that appeared this way to him. Starting from the centre of her throat, he carefully drew his blunted claw tips up and down behind her ear with the arm she was leaning on. Beautiful, shiny, little female.

He let her heat spread over him while experiencing her softness all along the front of him. He took in her sweet scent and the sounds of her life.

He didn’t know if Emerie had experienced terrible dreams in his presence, but there were times where she appeared tired when she woke. There were often dark smudges underneath her eyes that faded as the day went on. He drew his free hand down her body in the hopes of soothing her so she could sleep well – like she’d once done for him.

He noticed there was a small pocket of space between them, and dissatisfied with this, he grabbed her plump arse and thigh to pull her closer. Her hips pressed against his, and just the mere warmth and touch of her against his seam had movement shifting behind it.

Something distracted him enough to still his cock, and he let out a thoughtful ‘hmm?’

What had only been to pull her closer turned into him grabbing her arse to feel it within his palm. It is squishier than I thought it was. His orbs shifted to yellow as he enjoyed the way it jiggled and moulded between his thick fingers. I did not know it was so much fun to play with.

Emerie groaned, swatted at his hand in her sleep, and buried her face against his chest. Ingram’s sight shifted to orange. He hadn’t meant to disturb her; he’d merely gotten distracted.

That didn’t mean he let go, too content with grasping it.

At least she hadn’t woken and realised what he’d been doing.

Once she had fallen back into a deep sleep, he just petted her throat, jaw, and the side of her face with his claws. She released a little breathy rasp when he tickled right over her pulsing jugular. When he did it a second time, she gave another rasp and even tilted her chin up like she wanted more.

I like this sound and reaction, he realised.

It sent the strangest thrill through him, starting from his ear holes until it lanced straight to the centre of his groin. His seam clenched as his dick jerked. Even his sight shifted to a different shade of bright purple.

How and where else could he evoke this reaction from her?

He skated his claw down her ear, across her brow and down her cheek, but gained nothing. It was only when he tickled the back of her neck that a hitch of breath broke from her.

It was so quiet, such a small reaction in the grand scheme of things. Yet, it had been loud to him… distinct.

A weird but new tang lifted into her usual scent. One that had every scale, every fibre of fur, every bit of his skin prickling in awareness – of her.

It was also something that had his mouth drooling and his cock stiffening within seconds. It didn’t matter that it was a light, barely noticeable change, it still struck him like a thunderbolt.

With a groan, Ingram gripped her arse tighter and shoved her hips against his own, trying to use her body to stop himself from extruding. He hadn’t meant to grow aroused; he’d just wanted to pet this female.

His powerful reaction was startling.

Something is wrong. Why does she create this reaction from me? He was beginning to understand what emotion this colour of purple signified in his orbs, but not why Emerie called it forth so violently.

He craved something, but he didn’t know what. It had something to do with the now throbbing and hot thing putting an uncomfortable amount of pressure inside him. It desired something, hungered for something, but there was a piece missing in his mind.

Without that knowledge, he was unsure of what he needed to ease it, other than obtaining release.

Now that he’d stopped touching her affectionately, that tang in her scent became almost non-existent. That did not quell the arousal within him, nor did it settle his suddenly erratically beating heart.

No, it grew peskier, nagged louder.

Ingram winced and flinched as his cock thickened and hardened more, and not even her shoved against him could help contain it. His beak parted on a deep exhale as it slipped from him, as well as his tentacles that did not shield him like they did when they drew him back inside.

Despite the overwhelming craving to thrust against her abdomen after the initial blissful stroke of it slipping against it, he didn’t. He just stayed tense, hoping it would eventually go away and that their bodies huddling it would help to keep the air from making it sting.

How do I make it go away?

“Ingram,” Emerie called in a groggy voice, all broken and croaking. Even that had his dick swelling. “You’re hurting me. It’s too tight, I can’t breathe.”

She weakly pushed against him.

White sparked in his orbs for just a second, cutting through the purple. He loosened his hold on her, not realising he’d been desperately gripping her.

Her chest no longer pressed against his own so tightly, and her breaths settled. He wanted her to fall back asleep, to not register what was currently nestled between them.

Oh, but he knew the moment she did. His tentacles were twitching and moving, and were hard to ignore. When she slipped her hand down to inspect the movement, one curled around her fingertip and tugged.
