Heartless Sky(Zodiac Academy #7)(138)

Author:Caroline Peckham & Susanne Valenti

“Tyler’s mom died, Xavier,” Sofia said in horror as she looked up at me, her eyes full of tears as Tyler looked over at me through a haze of distress on his face.

And my cock just remained standing there, slowly starting to deflate as this entire shit show played out and I took the starring role.

“By the light of an unholy moon!” Geraldine cried, shielding her eyes. “What a time to unveil your Long Sherman!”

“Xavier,” Darius hissed. “Cover the fuck up.”

“Here, baby boy.” Mom grabbed some sweatpants from the bed, tossing them to me and I scrambled into them, nearly falling on my ass as everyone looked at me and my cheeks burned as hot as the sun.

No.

Why was this happening?

Why?!

The shame of what I’d done made my mind slow to catch up with the magnitude of this situation, but as Tyler buried his face in Sofia’s neck and everyone else started discussing what could be done to strike back against Lionel, I realised she hadn’t just died. My father had killed her. And I’d burst into Tyler’s room with my cock out only minutes after he’d heard the news.

“I’m sorry,” I blurted, hurrying over to Tyler as embarrassment, horror and sadness washed over me in heavy waves. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t know.”

“Let’s give them some space,” Darcy said softly, tears in her eyes as she looked at Tyler and she reached out to take Tory’s hand.

Everyone started filing out of the room and my brother tried to guide me out with them, but I dug my heels in, shaking my head at him. I had to say something, do something. I couldn’t just walk away after what I’d done. I needed to be there for my herd.

Darius let go of me and as the door clicked shut, I stepped closer to Tyler as Sofia ran her hands over his back in soothing circles.

“What can I do?” I rasped.

“There’s nothing you can do,” Tyler said hollowly and a whinny of distress left me.

I climbed onto the bed with them, needing to offer my comfort, to be close to my kind as I felt their suffering tangling with the air in this room. I wrapped my arms around them both and Tyler looked up, his reddened eyes meeting mine. There was rivalry between us still, but as he let out a soft snort, I could tell he was happy to put it aside right now, as I was. And he leaned against me as I nuzzled the side of his head, the sweet scent of Sofia melding with his richer aroma.

Our heads all fell together and we remained in silence as the weight of Tyler’s grief crashed down on us all like a sword on our backs. And my hate for my father grew to an almost tangible thing, begging to be sated.

He’d struck a blow at my herd and I felt bound to drive my horn into his heart and make him bleed in penance for this. But for now, all I could do was offer all the comfort I had to give and pray this didn’t break Tyler. Because he may have been my rival, but I realised he’d become more than that to me too. I cared about him in a way I didn’t really understand, and our fight for dominance wasn’t ever going to change that. He was a part of the family I’d found for myself, my herd, and I embraced that connection to him like I had embraced my own Order. And that was something my father could never take from us.

I sat in Darius’s lap, my forehead pressed to his as our heavy breaths mingled. I smirked to myself as I tried to summon the energy to dry us out after I’d managed to distract him enough to freeze him to a chair before climbing into his lap and taking control as I rode him to a climax that had made my fucking head spin while the heat of his Dragon worked to melt the ice away. Safe to say, it had been hot as hell and we’d both ended up drenched by the time he fought his way free and was coming inside me with a growl that made my entire body shiver with pleasure.

His magic was still thrumming within my skin and I rested my hands on his chest, feeling the solid thump of his heartbeat as his hands lingered on my waist and we remained there, enjoying the feeling of being so connected to each other.

It had been almost a month since Darius and Xavier had rescued the Pegasus herd from the academy, and since then a lot of time had been taken up with rescuing more of their kind from Nebular Inquisition Centres and using tip offs we’d received to stop Lionel’s persecution of their kind.

Gabriel and his family had been working to test the extent of Vard’s Sight, showing up at rallies and press conferences to try and strike small blows at Lionel that tested Vard’s abilities. They couldn’t hit very hard considering Lionel never went anywhere in public without having protective spells around him or anti-magic zones forged by the FIB, but the newspapers were filled with images of the false king covered in Griffin shit, splattered with Victoria sponge cake and even covered in glue that was mixed with Pegasus glitter. I wasn’t entirely sure what Gabriel was learning about Vard’s abilities, but whatever it was, it was sure as shit funny to see Lionel’s day ruined time and again for the sake of it.
